Ordinary dialogues on stage

After taking part in the 4th edition of MITsp with the show Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?, the German director Susanne Kennedy returns to the festival to engage in an artistic residence between 19th of February and the 4th of March of 2018, exploring new styles of oral language combined with the precision of physical and vocal expression. Ten Brazilian artists will be chosen to work under the guidance of Susanne, with Dutch performers Suzan Boogaerdt (Herr R. actress) and Bianca van der Schoot conducting the physical preparation. This residence is part of Susanne’s artistic research, which explores the possibilities of uncreative writing, as defined in theater by the American poet and critic, Kenneth Goldsmith.

This style seeks to blend ordinary expressions, dialogues and noises into the scene, in order to broaden the narrative possibilities. The residence will happen from Monday to Saturday, 10AM to 3PM, always in Goethe-Institut. On Sunday, a final experiment will be staged. The activity will have a translator on site.

Internationalization of shows

Many Brazilian theater companies will lose the opportunity to present performances of great potential, due to the lack of knowledge on how to reach foreign producers. With experience heading artistic projects of great international impact, the Croatian artist and producer Iva Horvat, resident of Barcelona, Spain and founder of Art Republic, an office dedicated to the management of art projects, conducts a workshop on strategies for the diffusion and international circulation of performances. For 5 days, Iva will guide the attendants on how to plan for the internationalization of art projects, sharing techniques for the analysis of markets, participation in festivals and the discovery of the strong points of a project.

How do you show your work to foreign producers and curators in a strategic way? How do you expose your work to foreign audiences? Iva will introduce hands-on exercises for the attendants, so they can recognize how to prepare their projects. Attendants must apply for selection.

Due to the uniqueness of the proposal, the lack of knowledge about the subject in Brazil, and the significant amount of applications, MITsp has decided to open eight vacancies for guest students among non-approved applicants. Their projects won’t be looked into in-depth by Iva Horvat, but the guests will be able to join the group and follow the workshop in its entirety. Besides the guests, there will also be an audit-researcher. For those that were not selected, we have good news: Iva Horvat will also deliver an open lecture about the subject between the 19th and the 23th of February. Internationalization of projects

Due to the large number of applicants to the workshop about Theater Internationalization and to the current significance of the matter to the context of performing arts in Brazil, the croatian artist and producer Iva Horvat, resident of Barcelona, Spain and founder of Art Republic, will deliver a lecture on how to plan for the internationalization of performing arts projects. She will highlight the most important aspects to be considered when evaluating international markets and the attendance to festivals around the globe. The activity is free of charge.

Non–normativity: creative possibilities of expression

In life and also in the theater, normativity ends up governing the possibilities of being and acting socially, silencing individualities and limiting expressive capabilities. The Swedish playwright and performer Liv Elf Karlén, author of Larger than this – Thoughts about Gender-Curious Acting, developed a method to understand how we distinguish and perform gender, sexuality and race in life and also on stage.

In her workshop, she will share techniques to dismantle not only the standard stereotypes present in theater, but also normative acting, in search for new and diverse ways of artistic expression. Throughout the 6-day workshop, attendants will learn new ways of working with movement, with the bodily and figurative construction of characters, and the relationship between body and space. Liv’s method uses masculinity and femininity as creative tools for imagining and interpreting, not as a means for imprisonment.

The workshop will have a translator on site. Participants must apply for selection.

O post Workshop with Liv Elf Karlén examines the dismantling of normativity apareceu primeiro em MITsp2018.

The kick-start of the workshop is the challenge of creating scenes and set-up scenarios, in dialogue with the festival’s program, by non-verbal means, based both on the guidance of Aby Cohen & Renato Bolelli Rebouças, set designers and curators of the Brazilian National Exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial 2019, as well as in the intersections between groups of participants from different backgrounds. The aim of the activity is to offer a metalinguistic approach to the breadth of theatrical language, being guided symbolically and materially by the festival’s program (ie shows, other pedagogical activities and round-tables) and answering the question: how does theater capture life and reality? The six meetings are spread over two weeks to cover the period prior to the festival and the festival days. A open presentation is scheduled on March 9th. With selection.

Selection for audit-researcher

The MITsp 5th edition’s Pedagogical Activities give professionals of different fields the opportunity to follow part of the program. In return, the audit-researcher shall produce an essay or a brief review, plus a photo series, a video and a performative speech, which handle the experience and its reverberations. These materials may be published in the Festival’s website.

All pedagogical activities are free of charge, but most involve a limited number of participants previously selected, each using different criteria, available in the MITsp website and social networks.

The same professional can apply to follow up as many activities as they like, but they may only be selected for one. The chosen audit-researchers need to be available for the whole period of the activity.

As the workshops get confirmed, the schedule and the selected participants will be announced. Each activity will have only one audit-researcher. Other audit participants will not be allowed.

My Documents

Argentine director Lola Arias will explore the lecture-performance or conference-performance scenic format and propose to ten selected participants a radical experience of scenically examine a troubling story for them, through various materials. The artists will be invited to suggest and organize performance narratives around the symbolic material and documents which are significant to them. It is important to emphasize that, when starting the workshop, those selected should already have in mind the theme or object whose history they wish to explore. In addition, workshop participants will have the opportunity to present their experiments developed with Lola at other times throughout the MITsp. The activity will be followed by a translator. Urban performativity: trying ways to be present in the city

How can we create coexistence spaces with others, with the city, with the urban expressions and with the arising fundamentalisms? And how to relate it all to theater? Is the theater a space of distinguished sociability? The workshop is based on the experience of  the researcher Marcelo Carnevale (Núcleo Diversitas-USP), who conducts workshops on coexistence in public space, and on the artist Ana Luisa Santos (http://www.anasantosnovo.com/). For the performances of mediation and relationship with the city, the idea is that, through reflections and practical experiments (drifts, performances), the participants can experience new forms of sociability and understandings about interactions with people, collective spaces and the meaning of “Theater” nowadays, in the Brazilian reality. The activity encourages the participants to explore together the extreme east of São Paulo, making contact with realities and perspectives quite different from those of the center. To the local residents, the workshop opens the possibility for contact renewal with the environment itself. Vacancies will be filled in order of registration.

Translations / Perversions – Victoria Pérez Royo (Spain)

The Spanish researcher Victoria Pérez Royo proposes a collaborative work based on “dissent”, inspired by the work and translation concept of the poet Leopoldo María Panedo. She does not intend to foster a community in which we all look and row in the same direction, but rather a space in which individual works gain meaning through dialogues that point (and contribute) to contrasts and differences. It is therefore a proposal of being together in which we abandon personal interests to achieve a common goal. Participants are invited to share unfinished art projects and materials and let these same materials be contaminated by an immanent and direct dialogue between the different poetics and methods of the participants. The work mechanisms are based on notions such as translation, misrepresentation, reuse, appropriation, etc. The lab is open to all who find themselves working on a text, a thesis, a performance, a composition, etc. and want to publicly share their productions.
