Synopsis

Father, son and aunt of a middle-class family live a common day-to-day life, until external events force them to deal with what exists outside of their home. The show, which debuts at MITsp 2017, seeks for a critical look of the white people onto themselves, in order to deconstruct oneself as a structural racism reproducer and perpetuator. The show reveals three complementary layers: a narrator’s testimony, which tries to manage the process of creating the play; a family in a standstill situation; and fragments of previous texts, written in the same creative process, but that for some reason could not be part of the scene. The stenographic space is formed by elements of the private universe, but without a unit that could generate the sense of home.

History

Although partners in several works, the creative team of White: the smell of lily and formal had never formed a group to create a show together. The starting point of the playwright, writer and director Alexandre Dal Farra, came from the discomfort with his own whiteness that immediately puts him in the oppressor’ side of the story. That was the motto for the first version of the text. After that, the actress Janaina Leite was invited to create and codirect the piece. The actors and directors Clayton Mariano and André Capuano joined next. Alexandre Dal Farra is a member of the Tablado de Arruar group, having been awarded with the 2012 Shell Prize and has been nominated for prizes such as APCA, Aplauso Brasil, Governor of the State of São Paulo and Questão de Crítica. Janaina Leite is an actress, director, author, and founder of the XIX Theater Group. Clayton Mariano is an actor, director and founder of the group Tablado de Arruar. André Capuano is an actor and director, having been part of several groups, among them, Cia São Jorge de Variedades and Tablado de Arruar.
