SYNOPSIS
Mozambican choreographer Idio Chichava explores migration processes and their multiple meanings through the lens of the body. Inspired by the dance rituals of the Makonde people, who live in Mozambique and neighboring countries, thirteen performers dance and sing traditional and contemporary Mozambican songs, as well as gospel and baroque-inspired music. The performance traces a path towards a body that assumes the full expression of its existence and synergy with others by singing and dancing simultaneously. Depicting migration as an emotional, spiritual, and collective journey, Chichava creates a performance with powerful energy—both deeply personal and universal.
BACKGROUND
Idio Chichava is a Mozambican dancer, choreographer, and artistic director. He lives between Mozambique and France, where he collaborates with the Kubilai Khan Investigations company. In his hometown of Maputo, he founded the Converge+ collective and has worked to promote artistic exchange while teaching dance to local communities. His multidisciplinary productions and collaborations seek to open spaces for investigating inner potential in connection with coexistence among different bodies. He is also the artistic coordinator of the Kinani platform and one of the producers of the Raiz Festival, dedicated to traditional Mozambican music. In 2024, he won the Salavisa European Dance Award alongside British-Rwandan artist Dorothée Munyaneza.
CRITICAL RECEPTION
“Evoking both the inner migration of beings and the geopolitical or geographical
migration of Mozambicans, Chichava sketches a human tapestry where body and
symbolism intertwine. (…) Festive in the energy the bodies bring to the space until exhaustion, the work distills an atmosphere of permanent resistance, expressedthrough tense bodies, repetitive gestures, and voices that, in unison, weave life narratives deeply rooted in a melancholic present.” Lotte Ogiers, Pzazz
“The group explodes into a pulsating crowd, emanating overwhelming energy that fills the room. Their bodies radiate strength, intensifying with every synchronized step. Their cries reinforce this collective feeling. It resonates with our bodies too: even offstage, you feel your heart pounding and your body vibrating with adrenaline. In this collective experience, the essence of theater is fully alive.” Philippe Couture, La Pointe
“More than a work about migration, Vagabundus explores solidarity and the beauty of the collective, as well as a certain aspiration for the transcendent, a metaphysical impulse. Alongside group compositions that celebrate the synchronicity of gestures, the performers deliver magnificent, uninterrupted a cappella singing—at times sensual, at times mesmerizing, always deeply cathartic. (…) The performance is a vibrant celebration of the fusion between traditional practices and contemporary reinventions.” Olivier Frégaville-Gratian d’Amore, L’Oeil d’Olivier
