Think-Step-Wander: Popular Routes

Auto Bumba Meu Boi

WITH Grupo Cupuaçu

Grupo Cupuaçu’s dramatic folk performance is driven by dance and music, reconstructing the mythical narrative of Boizinho de São João through the tragicomic portrayal of characters such as Amo, Catirina, Chico, and Vaqueiro. These central figures are joined by Cazumbá, indigenous characters, caboclos de pena, and vaqueiros. The play’s storyline follows the theft of a sacred bull, its subsequent illness, and its eventual healing through the intervention of healers, doctors, and the audience itself.

ABOUT

Grupo Cupuaçu, founded in 1986, is dedicated to researching, promoting, and teaching Brazilian artistic traditions, particularly those from Maranhão. Through courses, gatherings, a calendar of traditional activities, and performances, the group has become a national reference in preserving and innovating within popular traditions. Their repertoire includes traditional folk dances, collective songs, incidental music, and chants created by their members, alongside public-domain songs and popular compositions from different Brazilian regions. The group has played a key role in training educators, artists, dancers, and cultural practitioners.
