SYNOPSIS
nora chipaumire presents the opening of the creative process for her new work, born from an invitation by MITsp for the Zimbabwean artist to revisit her trajectory and present three works from different moments in her career. However, given the difficulty of reviving old works and also the artist’s refusal to participate in retrospectives, nora sought in this work-in-progress the “now” and the “live” as the only possible options for creation. According to her, “as all our experiences become muscle, breath, footfall , backbend, knowledge is shared through proximity to other bodies.” The word “acontinua” is a celebration of the continued work of essayist and curator André Lepecki with liberatory choreographies, as well as the artist’s personal dedication to the thoughts of Mozambican revolutionary leader Eduardo Mondlane (1920–1969), the Zapatistas, and all the unsung women without whom change is impossible.
“I am writing my obituary
A manual for a life lived chasing LIFE — acontinua
A manual for every black child — To dream , grow wings and fly
Get closer to the clouds become one with the clouds
Becoming one with the wind, soil, trees, stones, water
I am writing my obituary
A manual for a life lived chasing a life”

BACKGROUND
nora chipaumire was born in 1965 in what was then known as Umtali, Rhodesia
(now Mutare, Zimbabwe). She is a product of colonial education for black native
Africans – known as group B schooling. She studied law at the University of
Zimbabwe and dance at Mills College in Oakland, California. As African knowledge
acquisition does not come with baccalaureates it is impossible to quantify what the
African body holds. chipaumire acknowledges these knowledges in addition to the
western forms branded into her.
