SYNOPSIS
As a researcher of drag arts, Thiago Romero develops the concept of Afrofabulation, both as a director and as the performer of his Afro drag queen, Barbárie Bundi. In this multifaceted practice, his conversation with Alexandra G. Dumas highlights the creative processes behind his fabulations and the performative outcomes emerging from drag and Afro-diasporic worlds.
BACKGROUND
Alexandra G. Dumas is a professor at the UFBA School of Theater and at the Graduate Program in Performing Arts (PPGAC/UFBA). She works as a teacher and researcher in Afro-Brazilian popular cultures and in Black-referenced pedagogies and stage poetics. She is a member of the Marujada de São Benedito in Prado, Bahia.
Thiago Romero is a director, art director, actor, and arts educator. He holds a degree in art history from UERJ and in theater directing from UFBA and is currently a PhD candidate in performing arts at PPGAC/UFBA, where he also earned his master’s degree. He coordinates the theater department of Funceb’s Arts Training Center and founded Teatro da Queda. He was a member of Cia. NATA and created the platform DAN – Territory of Creation. As the creator of Barbárie Bundi, he develops drag art that moves across performance, music, and visual arts, including projects such as Dengo, Aquátika, AMÒ, Kitanda, and various shows and performances.
