SYNOPSIS
For the Tikuna people, an Indigenous nation that inhabits a vast area of the state of Amazonas, the word “TA” means great. They believe that language is part of who they are, just as the sounds of their environment are part of the language they speak—rumbles, hisses, and many other sounds they are able to hear. The Tikuna also define the place where they live as “TA,” a territory that shelters, welcomes, nourishes, and requires care. With choreography by Mário Nascimento and an original score by DJ Marcos Tubarão, the performance – featuring dancers from Corpo de Dança do Amazonas – presents the connection between dance and Amazonian cultural identity, honoring their people and the local environment.
HISTORY
Corpo de Dança do Amazonas was founded in 1998. A reference point for contemporary dance in the Amazon region, the company maintains an artistic program featuring a diverse repertoire. More than 60 works have been created in collaboration with guest artists from Brazil and abroad, highlighting local cultural diversity through a plurality of artistic languages. CDA seeks to foster dialogues that expand and strengthen its scope of action, continually reflecting on its role and contribution to cultural development, while considering the singularity of the Amazon and the breadth and diversity of its culture.
CRITICAL RECEPTION
“The performance, in its dialectics, surprises us in the right way. Not because—wow, look, it’s a great show from the Amazon—that kind of sympathetic surprise that only reveals the gentler forms of xenophobia; but because it is a great show that pulls us away from stereotypes. In doing so, it prepares audiences in the South and Southeast to welcome Amazonian artists who, with sustained work like this, can tour performing Nelson Rodrigues, Heiner Müller, Shakespeare—or themselves.”
