SYNOPSIS

Challenging the fetishization of eternal youth and subverting the normative body, this performance conceived by the duo chameckilerner draws on a physical vocabulary inspired by iconic nudes from art history. These paintings, photographs, and sculptures are brought to life by performers of diverse ages, abilities, racial backgrounds, and genders, stripping the “standard body” of its power within the visual imagination. Driven by personal histories, the passage of time, and the accumulated experiences inscribed in each body, the work creates a space where identity is not confined by age. Onstage, bodies marked by time shift from objects of fear to sources of fascination, activating a complex play of identification and desire.

BACKGROUND

chameckilerner is an interdisciplinary duo founded in 1993 in New York by Brazilian artists Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner. Both trained in dance at PUC/PR, they have spent over three decades researching the intersections between dance and time-based media. Their performances, videos, and installations have been presented at venues such as MASP, MASS MoCA, The Kitchen, and SummerStage. They have received awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and NYFA, completed residencies at the Watermill Center and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, and presented work throughout the Americas and Europe. From 2003 to 2004, they curated Casa Hoffmann in Curitiba.

CRITICAL RECEPTION

“While artworks capture bodies in a single moment in time—often fetishizing or idealizing their subjects—the performance is more interested in how time alters and marks the body, and how the body perceives itself. A meditation on change, the work is also a kind of beginning anew.”
Siobhan Burke, The New York Times
