SYNOPSIS
From alleyways to stages, from street battles to spotlights, from the tangled wires of utility poles to the g-strings of the girls: baile funk and vogue ball intersect in this dance performance directed by Patfudyda. Originating in distinct geographical and chronological contexts, the movements share a peripheral and predominantly Black origin, as well as their role as symbols of cultural, political, and social resistance. The work brings together artists from both artistic expressions and explores the choreographic attitude of the two universes. Onstage, poses and steps challenge conventions and elaborate new historical and cultural relationships.
BACKGROUND
Wallace Ferreira/Patfudyda is a choreographer, performer, and visual artist. She holds a degree in dance from UFRJ and in visual arts from Parque Lage, and completed a residency at Instituto Inclusartiz. She received the ImPulsTanz Award for Young Choreographers (2022) and the FOCO ARTRIO Award (2024), and was named an Artist in Focus at MITbr 2025. Her works consist of studies of social codes choreographed by dissident bodies. Director of Atraque, Vogue Funk, and the Repertório Trilogy, her works have been presented at galleries and festivals such as the Lyon Dance Biennale, the 35th São Paulo Biennial, the Dance Umbrella Festival, and the 11th Contemporary Dance Biennale of Mozambique. In the ballroom scene, she is part of the Undeniable Haus of Basquiat and is also a legendary mother of the Kiki House of Mamba Negra.
Quafá Produções works in the production, circulation, management, and fundraising of artists and projects connected to urban, peripheral, and popular cultural expressions from Rio de Janeiro. It specializes in public funding management and in the national and international management and circulation of prominent artists.
CRITICAL RECEPTION
“The artistic and aesthetic variety and the technical power overflow any recognition of its belonging to the stage. Here, it is the collage of universes that reveals the impact of coexistence, contact, and the power of celebration and festivity as forms of resistance and artistic and cultural expression.”
Henrique Rochelle, Crítica de Minuto
“Vogue Funk is a symbol of resistance and visibility for peripheral arts.”
Quintino Gomes Freire, Diário do Rio
