ARTIST: Grupo Sobrevento

SYNOPSIS

The performance celebrates Grupo Sobrevento’s 40th anniversary with a reflection on the dreams of a simple life and the complexities of immigration. Based on stories of Bolivian immigrant children who live near the company’s headquarters in the Belém neighborhood of São Paulo’s East Side, the piece begins with everyday objects to create a poetic narrative. Music and sounds from different regions of Bolivia shape the atmosphere of the performance and evoke the search for a utopian sea, symbolizing dreams of a magical future and the childhood left behind.

HISTORY

Founded in 1986, Grupo Sobrevento is a professional theater company dedicated to the research and creation of puppet, object, and figure theater. Maintaining steady and uninterrupted work since its founding, the company has performed in more than one hundred cities across all regions of Brazil and in several other countries. Its productions have received major awards, including the Shell, APCA, and Maria Mazzetti prizes. In 2025, the group received a special APCA award in recognition of its four decades of work and its cultural activities at its headquarters in São Paulo’s East Side.

CRITICAL RECEPTION

To Mariela is a performance that sensitively and inventively combines object theater, Bolivian culture, and the poetry of everyday life. The piece celebrates humanity and the bonds that unite us beyond borders.”
Bob Sousa, Em Foco

“Watching the collective’s productions means, in different ways, accessing what may be best within ourselves. Works of striking aesthetic beauty, grounded in the history of modernity, seen from the perspective of neighbors and partners.”
— Alexandre Mate
