SYNOPSIS
On a day of celebration, an ordinary man, after arguing with God, revisits his own history and asks how he might have avoided a tragedy. Moving between the countryside and the city, Teatro Gueroba investigates responses to the pandemic and the reactivity of a polarized political landscape. Life and death, the passage of time, and what remains of hope shape a dramaturgy about a multifaceted Brazil and the risk of extinction facing the Cerrado, where the group is based. Crosses in red soil, numbers carved into planks, pau-brasil wood, and the gueroba palm that regrows with the rain: real stories intersect with Darcy Ribeiro, Folia de Reis, and ancestral Black and Indigenous traditions. The work transforms collective mourning into memory, body, and territory.
BACKGROUND
Based in the countryside of Goiás, in the city of Ouvidor, Teatro Gueroba brings together artists from different regions of Brazil, including Hercules Morais, Clissia Morais, Angela Ribeiro, and Renato Navarro. The collective combines theater, critical thought, and attentive listening to investigate threatened territories and endangered ways of life. Gueroba is a Cerrado palm that withstands fire and sprouts again with the rains. The group’s first work, Republikkk or Crossroads Aren’t Alleys, developed from immersions in the Cerrado and visits to COVID-19 cemeteries in the Amazon, inaugurated the cycle Darcy’s Brazils – Biographies of a Country on the Verge of Extinction, with expeditions through the Amazon, Pantanal, Pampas, and Atlantic Forest.
