Autonomy in Contemporary Criticism: Paradoxes, Disputes and Dissensus

WITH Ivana Moura, Kil Abreu, Luciana Romagnolli, Marcos Alexandre, Rodrigo Dourado, Wellington Junior and Valmir Santos

SYNOPSIS

What spaces of autonomy are available to contemporary theatre criticism, and how can they be cultivated? Members of AICT-Brasil reflect on various impasses related to this question in the current context of criticism’s migration from print media to the internet. Topics to be discussed include the economic precarization of the profession; the relationship between autonomy and dissensus in criticism; the paradoxes involved in dialogue with festivals, curatorial frameworks, and the artistic community; as well as a broader reflection on the place and relevance of criticism within the arts system and the Brazilian public sphere.
