SYNOPSIS
In this performance, artist Keila-Sankofa, from Manaus, state of Amazonas, manifests Lord Gourd Head, a visual and sonic presence that intones sensory narratives about the Amazon. The regalia, made of bowls and gourds, appears as an apparition that reinscribes the historical encounter between Black and Indigenous populations. By centering these supports, the artist celebrates a shared heritage between Afro-diasporic and Indigenous identities. More than objects, these items are central to the artist’s research and life, moving between practical use, sacred ritual, and cosmogonies of world creation. It is a living image of Amazonian multiplicity translated into matter and sound.
BACKGROUND
Keila-Sankofa was born in Manaus, state of Amazonas. She is a visual artist and filmmaker. She creates audiovisual installations that present video, performance, photographs, and film. She develops research on memory, using manipulation and fictionalization as a laboratory apparatus that recreates and speculates on histories that legitimize and suggest patterns. She is part of the Da Várzea das Artes Group, composed of artists from Brazil’s North who conceive and produce activities related to visual arts, audiovisual practices, and photography. Many of her projects are multi-language, constructing works, activities, and hybrid, contemporary actions.
