Work in progress

Jukybox

ARTIST: Cris Meirelles e Jaya Batista

60 min | Ages 12+

SYNOPSIS

In this scenic-musical performance, a music machine is awakened when Juky, a charismatic queer MC, encounters her audience. Taking on the role of master of ceremonies in a popular variety-style show, she presents herself as a pop star and a symbol of strength against social oppression, blending the urgency of spoken word, references from Minas Gerais popular culture, and romantic songs. By putting tradition and diversity into tension, this work-in-progress returns to the audience the image of a more plural popular Brazil—one in which celebration, faith, and culture can also become territories of respect, joy, affection, and re-existence for LGBTQIAPN+ people.

BACKGROUND

Cris Meirelles and Jaya Batista, queer artists born in the 1980s and originally from cities in the countryside of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, respectively, began their artistic collaboration in 2023. Their work engages with popular expressions such as festivities and protests. Their first collaboration was Experiment I: Resistance and the (F)Party. They also led the creation of Terraquosa with the LIVRE University at Teatro Vila Velha and the scenic-musical performance Caravana LIVRE. At the Farofa showcase, they presented the first public opening of Jukybox in 2024. The following year, in partnership with Casa Farofa and Corpo Rastreado, they undertook a creative immersion that resulted in two laboratories—Jukermesse and Bailarico da Juky—aimed at fostering dialogue between popular festivities and LGBTQIAPN+ lived experiences.
