SYNOPSIS
This historical reparation performance by Nego Fugido places Black people at the center of the struggle that led to the abolition of slavery. The popular manifestation, born in the quilombola community of Acupe in Bahia, narrates—through apparitions—the saga of enslaved people who, in battle, subdue the King of Portugal and demand a letter of manumission. The performances take place annually in the streets in July, amid a series of quilombola cultural expressions such as samba de roda, capoeira, and the appearances of Caretas, Mandus, and Bombachos—symbolic elements fundamental to identifying a past marked by the enslavement of African populations.
HISTORY
Nego Fugido is one of the most traditional expressions of popular culture in the Recôncavo region of Bahia. For more than a century, it has been performed by fishermen from the quilombola community of Acupe, located in the municipality of Santo Amaro, Bahia. The origin of the apparitions is linked to the myth of a curse that struck the region during the colonial period—a metaphor for slavery. Surrounded by multiple layers of symbolism, the performances activate the knowledge of traditional communities and reaffirm the construction of an Afro-Brazilian identity in Bahia.
