One day, when his electric rice cooker, a popular Cuckoo, informed him that his meal was ready, Jaha Koo experienced the <\/span>golibmuwon<\/span><\/i>, an untranslatable Korean word expressing the feeling of isolation that characterises the lives of many young people in his country \u2013 the result, mainly, of an economic crisis that devastated South Korea about 20 years ago. Onstage, with three of these cookers, the interpreter presents a lecture-performance that dives into the history of his country. Combining documentary images, music and humorous dialogues, the artist investigates endemic issues impacting his generation \u2013 such as rising suicide rates and social withdrawal \u2013 and builds a narrative from his personal experience and reflections on political events, happiness and death.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hamartia Trilogy<\/b><\/p>\n

Cuckoo<\/span><\/i> is the second part of Jaha Koo’s Hamartia Trilogy, together with the shows <\/span>Lolling and Rolling<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The History of Korean Western Theatre<\/span><\/i>. The imperialism of the past and present, and its sometimes-unexpected personal impact are the common threads of these three works of documentary theatre presented at MITsp. In Greek, <\/span>hamartia<\/span><\/i> means “tragic flaw or shortcoming”, a concept that interweaves each of the works differently, which themes involve the clash between Eastern and Western cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jaha Koo is a South Korean theatre creator and composer. His work, closely linked to politics, history and his own personal issues, moves between multimedia and performance, bringing music, videos, texts and authorial installations. He currently presents his shows around the world. In 2024, he is working on a new creation, Haribo Kimchi<\/em>, and on his musical project, GuJAHA. The artist took his first steps at the Brussels Arts Workshop Pianofabriek and the B\u00e2tard Festival.
