Thomas Ostermeier, one of the leading figures of contemporary world theatre, reflects on how sociology directly influences his theatrical work\u2014from artistic approach to the themes he chooses. For him, the question of class belonging is a fundamental source of inspiration for dramatic situations and specific character constellations within a play. A perspective shaped by social science opened the German director\u2019s eyes to the works of Henrik Ibsen.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond all symbolic and psychological elements, Ibsen\u2019s characters are always situated very concretely within specific social and economic conditions. The pursuit of social status and the fear of losing it are recurring and decisive motivating factors for them. This perspective runs through Ostermeier\u2019s work in productions such as <em>Nora, Hedda Gable<\/em>r, <em>The Master Builder<\/em>, and, more recently, <em>The Wild Duck<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, a series of encounters shaped him: while studying at the Hochschule f\u00fcr Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in East Berlin, sociologist Wolfgang Engler introduced him to the writings of Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault, and Pierre Bourdieu. This taught Ostermeier to understand society as something historically developed. Later, the personal story of Didier Eribon\u2014about rising from a deeply proletarian background to a position within the academic bourgeoisie\u2014resonated strongly with him. He also maintains a close working relationship and friendship with \u00c9douard Louis, with whom he collaborates on several projects, including the productions presented at MITsp: <em>History of Violence and Who Killed My Father<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c34966b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c34966b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Thomas Ostermeier has been resident director and member of the artistic direction of the Schaub\u00fchne since 1999. He graduated in directing from the Hochschule f\u00fcr Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch and served as artistic director of the Baracke at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. He has directed productions at the M\u00fcnchner Kammerspiele, the Edinburgh Festival, the Burgtheater in Vienna, and the Com\u00e9die-Fran\u00e7aise in Paris. In 2004, he became an associate artist of the Festival d\u2019Avignon, where he regularly presents his productions.
